Prograf 6100

The IPF 6100 is an incredible printer. It handles the variety of media we all use including canvas, fine art paper, and every other fine photographic media there is. We purchase most of our materials from Lexjet out of Florida, and they have done all of the profiling work for you with their profiles. Utilizing this combination ensures minimal waste and maximum quality. Previously we reviewed the IPF 5000, which wasn’t our favorite. Quality was terrific but its paper loading, and continuous error message made it a bear. With the 6100 these issues seem to have been eliminated and the quality is even better and more accurate with what we see on screen, and it is a lot faster.

If you are thinking of a 24” printer, the 6100 is awesome. It has a 384 meg ram set up but no hard drive. If you only want a 17” the new 5100 is supposed to have fixed its predecessor’s problems, however you may want to rethink that, because the 24” has far more flexibility with not that much more investment.

NOTE: The new 6200 is now available, we have not tested it, but Canon keeps making their units better, and the 200 series are including hard drives, which should make throughput considerably faster. The 6200 has a 80 gig hard drive, with 384 megs of ram. By the way, if you are considering the IPF 8100 with its 44” path, it comes complete with 384 megs of ram and a 80 gig hard drive. In testing Epson vs Canon, Canon always comes out with a higher speed, and virtually no difference in quality. Part of this must be due to the two head configuration, wereas the Epson’s only have one head.
